How Our Residential Architecture Firm Helps Define Communities with Exceptional Design Concepts
Real estate developers in the early 20th century discovered a lush, wooded area just over the Kansas state line. This area was named Mission Hills and is now one of the most exclusive residential suburbs in the U.S. Stately residences of all architectural styles blend seamlessly with the historic wooded landscape to create an idyllic, timeless neighborhood.
Mission Hills is also home to 85 new builds and 200 remodels designed by NSPJ residential architects. Founded in 1961, this Kansas City-area architecture firm has nurtured an enduring relationship with the Mission Hills community. In some cases, our team has even designed several homes for multiple generations of a single family name.
This history of designing luxury custom homes has significantly influenced the architectural landscape of Mission Hills with a range of styles, from traditional to contemporary, that are timeless.
A Tour of Mission Hills Homes Designed by Our Residential Architecture and Design Firm
Each project tells the story of its owners and their vision for what a luxury home could be. For example, these completed projects artfully weave our design work into the area’s character and history.
Prairie-Style Contemporary: This custom home, which sits on two acres that slope towards a wooded creek bed, was designed with respect to the surrounding properties. The limestone, Marvin clad windows, smooth stucco and stack stone terraces create a cohesive and timeless exterior. The interiors are a nod to classic simplicity with respectful proportions to the scale of the exterior, featuring natural stone finishes and stained wood. The outdoor living areas and landscape architecture continue this theme with modern balustrades that overlook a fire pit and clay bocce court, lending themselves to formal and informal entertainment in all seasons.
Spanish-Colonial Home: This NSPJ project is an authentic Mission-style custom home. The imposing walls, reclaimed mission barrel-tile roofing and hardscape walkways and use of distressed plaster over 12” thick masonry walls fully authenticate this home’s contribution to Mission Hills architecture.
Tuscan-Style Home: This home strikingly resembles a Tuscan estate with a design that centers around entertainment, colored by old world charm. The central courtyard and outdoor pool area extend this concept by capturing the elegance of a multi-level Roman palazzo in summer, complete with fountains.
English Manor: This estate takes its cues from an English castle, in structure and in landscape, for a stately presence. Battlements, towers and a grand entrance deliver a stateliness that suits the classic side of Mission Hills and blending seamlessly with the older neighboring residences.
Classic Contemporary: The custom home is an example of how a minimalist concept can project timelessness in the hands of experienced residential architects. The contemporary design is simple with attention to proportion and scale, set on a lot with dramatic topography. To meet unique landscape challenges, the front and rear of the home feature a retaining wall, with the rear wall creating additional landscape architecture features to harness these contours as key design elements.
Continuing our active presence in Mission Hills, these recent remodels were designed to modernize and update homes to fulfill the client’s vision and add custom touches throughout that incorporate architectural gestures in these spaces.
Mission Hills French Colonial: NSPJ transformed this home for a family that desired the classic symmetry and stateliness of its French Colonial exterior, yet required a transformation of the home’s footprint to meet their needs for artful, functional living. The result is a masterfully designed open-floor plan with main-level laundry and an outdoor entertainment and kitchen area. The client gave NSPJ design freedom to create a thoughtful, dramatic reimagining of this home. Larger windows open up the house to ambient light, with other custom touches adding a personalization for the family.
Stately Colonial Revival: A family with Connecticut roots approached NSPJ to accurately and tastefully remodel their Colonial Revival home to accentuate the beauty of this architectural style and provide a strong sense of interconnectedness throughout the home. This home’s design achievements include floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that distinctly echo a solarium, as well as shutters and eave vents that complement the Colonial Revival molding.
NSPJ understands the role we play in meeting a client’s expectations for their new home, while also adding distinct value to the larger community. Using classic design principles and listening to our clients’ needs, we are able to create timeless, luxury designs that shape the architectural landscape of neighborhoods.
