Architecture

Nestled in the wooded highlands of Mission Hills, this midcentury modern residence was originally designed by Edward Tanner, a mentor to one of NSPJ’s founders. During a generational transition of ownership, the property is undergoing a remodel focused on creating an “urban oasis” that blends modern livability with the character of the original architecture.

On the exterior, most of the natural cedar siding from the original structure is preserved with new doors and expansive glass windows that modernize the home and welcome views of a nearby country club. Three long gables extend deep into the plan, carrying daylight throughout the home. Light-stained woods and plaster create a sleek, gentle palette, while a two-sided masonry fireplace finished in Venetian plaster anchors the living and dining spaces.

The property includes three bedrooms, three baths and a three-car garage. A reimagined living area called the “Florida room” opens fully to the outdoor addition of a pool, as a central link now unifies indoor gathering areas with outdoor living on both sides.
