The Mount Carmel Hospice House, a part of Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, was designed to provide a peaceful residential atmosphere for patients and their families. Drawing inspiration from a lodge, the exposed timber beams and other design features add warmth to the environment.

One of the challenges for this space was to break up a long corridor with rooms on each side of it that is typical in hospitals. The architects designed gathering spaces along the corridor to create gather spaces, such as living rooms or a dining room, in addition to the resident rooms, that add to the sense of a home environment.

The interiors also invoke a sense of warmth and grounding, with the colors, material selections and finishes in the space. The design in each room was purposeful, designed to help invoke and influence meaningful experiences. The spa, for example, has beautiful a quartzite feature that illuminates and adds a relaxing glow to the room.

A separate chapel connects via glass to the Hospice House. Throughout the grounds, thoughtful landscape includes a serene mediation path with a fountain, as well as front and rear courtyards.

We strive to be the best residential architects in Kansas City, as we serve our clients around the country.
